Anthony Evans, President and CEO
Anthony Evans has fought tirelessly
to reduce health disparities, foreclosure, homelessness
and black on black crime as well as promote financial
literacy and help preserve environmental justice
across the country.
In 2005 in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Anthony
Evans and the NBCI mobilized over 15,000 volunteers
to serve in the disaster relief effort. These
volunteers came from NBCI member and sister churches.
The volunteers came from many ethnic backgrounds,
illustrating NBCI’s policy of an interfaith and
interracial approach to solving social problems.
NBCI churches, along with other minority churches
across the country, helped to raise more than
$1 billion in cash and social services.
In 1989, Anthony Evans publicly showed the ferventness
of his convictions when he was arrested during
a protest in front of the South African embassy
until the end of minority rule and the freeing
of Nelson Mandela. He helped continue that protest
for nearly two years.
In July 2006, Anthony Evans participated in a
massive protest outside the Sudanese embassy to
denounce the country’s role in the genocide of
its African citizens. While still a college student,
Anthony Evans mobilized local colleges in Vermont
to donate $15,000 to the investigation of the
Atlanta child killings in the early eighties.
A native of Savanna, Ga., Anthony Evans earned
a Bachelor’s degree in Religion in 1981 from Middlebury
College, Vermont. Anthony Evans was ordained in
1982 and went on to earn a Master’s in Divinity
in 1988 from Howard University School of Divinity.
He became NBCI’s president in 1992 and continues
to work on behalf of social and economic justice
issues. He leads a coalition of 34,000 churches
across the country fighting against health disparities,
promoting financial literacy, protecting babies
from abuse and neglect, and helping to preserve the environment.
Anthony Evans has a clear understanding of how
public policy affects and determines the impact
of these issues in which the black church fights
for and against. He is determined to preserve
the moral authority of the black church’s voice
in the public square.
Under the leadership of a founding minister and
president, Anthony Evans through NBCI uses a powerful
national network of 16,000 African American and
Latino member churches and 18,000 sister churches
to eradicate racial discrepancies in healthcare,
education and housing. NBCI also works to preserve
the environment.
The NBCI network is actively engaged in programs
and activities in five core initiatives:
Health & Wellness
NBCI creates and distributes Health Notes, brochures
that explain complex health issues in a medically
sound and substantive manner, but uses simplified
language to aid understanding.
Over 700,000 brochures have been published and
distributed on the following topics: Depression,
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Diabetes, Breast
Cancer, Childhood Obesity and Understanding Diet
Management, accredited substance abuse and prevention
programs and emergency shelter programs.
Technology Information Literacy The Digital
Divide
In partnership with the National Association of
Broadcasters (NAB), NBCI used its network to distribute
information about the national Digital TV transition.
DTV carries the potential of leaving behind large
groups of people, including persons with disabilities,
seniors, residents in rural communities and racial
minorities. About 3.5 million applications for
the federal government’s converter box coupon
program were distributed among at-risk communities
nationwide.
Foreclosure Prevention Campaign – Help
for Homeowners
In February 2008, NBCI partnered with the Mortgage
Bankers Association and Fannie Mae to launch its
Foreclosure Prevention Campaign. NBCI hosted seminars,
created and distributed a step-by-step guide,
the Foreclosure Prevention Guide to help congregants
and members of the public identify resources in
the housing industry designed to help homeowners
survive economic difficulty and navigate the turbulent
housing market.
The Baby Fund – (www.BabyFund.info)
The Fund provides financial assistance on an emergency
basis and offers longterm educational assistance
through faithbased organizations that will provide
comprehensive child development classes to parents
who need it.
Environmental
NBCI promotes understanding of environmental issues
and plans to partner with national environmental
organizations to create green facilities throughout
our faith communities. NBCI has a special emphasis
on teaching our children the theological tenants
of protecting and preserving the environment.
